Every day we were in Reykjavik, we walked past this place. Jacky kept wanting to go in … but the name was just too off-putting for me.
Eventually I realised that it literally just meant ‘Coffee Shop’ … still a little morbid for me.
Ahh I was wondering how this was off putting to you. I had no idea people would associate this with the word coffin.
I think it’s harsh of you to call it poorly named, this in an entirely different language from English. You can’t go around expecting everyone to name everything in regards to whatever the hell it might mean in English. Easy on the Anglo-centric worldview.
Kofinn simply means the hut or the bungalow, not coffee shop. The name has nothing to do with coffee.
I just kept looking at the picture wondering why it was so special, then read the text, and I hadn’t made the connection with “coffin” at all.
